Mock-up Designs (Cover art)

In this post I came up with three concept designs for the front cover of the music cover. The aim of this was that I can gain feedback on aspects of the designs in which they likes and what one is the best of the three shown overall as well as how in which to improve them. The first design produced was a long shot of the guy sitting down and the girl leaning against a bottle of poison as it connotes to the song title poison. The bottle would be made using photoshop along with the cupid's as they connote love which is usually reminiscent of love. This design got a positive interaction because of the relevance with the actual song because of the poison bottle and the cupid's. However the negatives that occurred with this is the shot type as the majority of music album covers have as shot ranging from close-up to medium-shot and not a long-shot as a person cannot see the main artist of the song.
The second Design proposed was a side shoot of the main artist however, has a merged image of a man and woman about to kiss extending out of the back of the guy head. Thais was meant to combine real photography as well as Photoshop editing in relevance with my case studies on music albums as I was looking at the combination of graphic designed covers in cohesion with real images. The positives from this approach would be the shot type as it is more conventional for for album covers as a similar shot was used in Drake's 'Nothing was the same' album and the design would be reflective of the majority of music covers interpreting a graphical aspect. The negative comments came from the image that was to be displayed graphically as it wasn't reflective of the song. As a result I am attempting to create an extension that would be more coherent with the actual song.

Ninth Day Of Editing (22/10/16)

As a result of the focus group we began continuing to improve on the aspects people stated needed improvement. The first was the font as people stated it looked too feminine for the song so, we decided to change it to something more elegant for the song. In addition to this we also had noticed a problem with the sizing of the font a sit was at a point where it looked like it was positioned in the top corner of the screen so, we adjusted it so that all the words would fit in perfectly in the frame. In addition to this we also picked out another clip we could apply the drawing effect to as we were also told to continue to do this effect as it looked interesting however, we decided to apply a multi-colour effect to the line to make it provide variation to the previously used black outline.

Music Video Progression Screening (Focus Group)

This video consist of the progression screening of the music videos editing as we pitched it to a focus group to receive feedback as to points which stood out and parts we can improve upon. In this we showed the parts we had edited (second verse chorus) and after explained the concept of the video.

Positives

  • Storyline made sense
  • Range of locations and castings
  • Editing (Outline & Text effects)
  • Shot transitions
  • Camera quality (exposure)
  • Lighting in each shot
Point of Improvement

  • Lip-sync slightly off in some shots
  • Text effect font looks slightly feminine so change it to something more appropriate
  • Continue the line effect in all of the parts captured in the studio

Eighth Day of Editing (21/11/16)

Today we continued editing through to the second verse. In this we used the shots captured on the wall against Stratford International as we were able to do the text effect when he is rapping. This was to work in commune with location shots against the wall as a side shot this was to support the rule of three as we didn't position the singer directly in the middle of the shot but, on the left hand side with the text appearing on the left hand side of the shot. This was done during the rapping as he talks faster in this verse so by displaying the words on the side one can keep track of what he is saying in the track. In this we had two shots of him doing this we had one as a close up and one as a long-shot so, we were able to cut between the two clips.

Seventh Day of Editing (17/11/16)

In this session I spent 3 hours alone polishing some of the editing in the clip by completing the writing effect on the clips against the wall and started doing more of the drawing on the clips in the studio prior to the lesson. During the lesson we began placing the clips in order up until the bridge of the audio. In addition to this we also got feedback on the parts we had edited so far as a result we got the feedback of:

Positives

  • The editing effects of the outline around the singer
  • Camera quality of the shots taken
  • Range of locations
  • Cutting rate of shots
Improvements
  • Changing the font used in the introduction
  • Continuing the line effect throughout the shots taken in the studio
  • Match up the lip-sync of the Singers and the track

Sixth day of Editing (16/10/16)

In today's lesson we continued with the text editing but, was also planning on what to do for the bridge of the song as this is a part of the song that is slower than the rest of the song however would not require us to do additional filming. As a result we decided that the best thing is to merge the clips we have got already seeing that we already had a lot in a concept where we could slow down the clip to sync up with the music as we already have clips of him singing it but, we also had clips of him acting to the particular part of the song in which we could use. To conclude we decided that we would make the best with what we already got because of how hard it is to arrange filming sessions with both the actors at the same time.

Fifth day of Editing (15/10/16)

In today's session we continued editing the second verse and the chorus of the song. In this we synced up the clips to the music and begun working on the feedback from peers in using the drawing effect in all clips captured in the studio as well as do different effects with the drawing besides outline because of our research into the Justin Bieber lyrical video he done more than outline the main artist but, done drawings around him so, as a result we have started doing other stuff than outlines. In addition to this we have also started doing the writing effect in which the text is displayed next to the singer as he says the word. this is done during the rapping section of the music as this would be faster than the singing so displaying the words gives the viewer the ability to know what the singer is saying as well as being able to sing along. This was done against all of the shots done at Stratford International against the wall to give this area some effect than just looking plain.

Remix of Jahkoy Poison (9/11/16)

Today w e continued editing the video up until the second verse as we made sure the singing was synced up and connected well with each other. In addition we found a remixed version of Jahkoy's Poison however the only thing that has changed was the beat (BPM stays the same) and the intro instrumental has been moved to the conclusion of the song. As a whole this improves the songs genre as the original was more focussed towards R&B with the instrumental and the new one has a heavier base line without the keyboard melody. As a whole we planned on whatsapp the changes that would need to be made to suit the new beat.

3D Text Effect (10/11/16)

One of the other effects that we looked into was the inclusion of 3D text to narrate the words sung by the artist appearing on screen this is usually done in lyrical video where the text would appear on the screen as the artist sings it. This is usually done with the use of the rule of third where the main actor is not positioned directly in front but, is positioned to the right or left hand side of the grid and never in the centre. The benefits of doing this is that their would be space on the side to edit upon. This method is based on the Kendrick Lamar swimming pool as he used the rule of thirds in his shots in placing a character to the left or right of the central frame. However the lyric style is based of looking into research videos as they usually provide two versions so, if no one knew a specific verse and wanted to sing along to the verse the lyrics would be on screen in the time of the artist sings the song. This is going to be featured in the rapping verse of the song as that is faster part of the song and would benefit from the words being of screen at the pace of his singing. This is most notable in Kanye West ft T-Pain song 'Good Life' as they use a more cartoon and animated approach to display parts of the chorus on the screen as they say it.

Drawing Effect (7/11/16)

In the music video, we began to edit some of the shots in that were done in the studio and decided to add the drawing effect to some of the footage this effect style consists of drawing around certain objects in a single frame and chaining them together to create an outline of the main artist. This has been used in videos like the Justin Bieber (What do you mean lyric video) in which the same effect was applied to his video of a people skate boarding a this is applied to the scenery and the skateboarders, lytics and the environment. This creates a cartoon/ hand drawn effect that is often used in slower songs to capture key actions. This would be used in our video over the key actions done in the studio as those are the more plain scenes that we captured in the studio. The software we would use to do this is after effects and link it with premiere pro so all the changes we make on premiere pro would reflect of the original video allowing us to work on then individually. The goal is that we could use a range of edits to change the overall presentation of the video.

Filming Olympic Park & Westfield (4/11/16)

Today we booked out the camera for filming in Stratford and the olympic Park. In this shoot we are planning to record 4 key shots from the storyboard which are the escalator shot reverse shot, against the wall, walking (three point tracking shot) and mirror shot. This was filmed from 14:30 - 5:30pm. As a whole the footage that we captured on the day was exquisite as the lighting in each shot worked well with the video concept as well as us being able to gather the footage to fill the gaps in which we needed to record more footage to bridge certain gaps in the video structure as well as giving us a range of locations.

Email to Olympic Park

Today I finalised the application form to film in hyde park and sent it to the designated website to receive a reply as to whether they would forward the request to commence filming there. The plan was that this had to be sent 5 working days before the intended day of filming so we was planning to film on the 5/11/16 as this was a weekend in which we would all be available to film as it was around midday. To conclude the email I attached the letter on headed paper to prove  that we were all students to bypass the need for event liability insurance as well as a site plan for the areas that we were planning to use in the filming process.

Third Day Of Editing (19/10/16)

In today's session we took the advice that we were given as to syncing the track and the acting together so, we removed the effects that we previously had on the clip and began syncing the video along with the music audio. As a result we had the clip looking natural with the backing music. In addition to this we were planning on when and where we would be filming for the next session on either Friday or Saturday. As a result we would be finalising this discussion on 20/10/16.

Second Day Of Editing (18/10/16)

In this we continued editing the clips as well as got feedback from our peers as to areas we could improve upon as well as areas we done successfully. The main issue came specifically from the editing standpoint and slightly the filming as we noticed a delay in the actors timing in the video in addition the delay in the singer's voice which is to do with the syncing of his singing to that of the original audio. As a result we have got the feedback of expanding the audio and plotting key points in the actual audio and in the recorded video so that the matching of time would be seamless, In addition we also got the advice to slow down or speed up the clip so that the speed is perfectly matched to the audio. However, the praises that  we received were in the actual footage that was gathered as the lighting and video quality of the video was immaculate. As a result tomorrow we are going to re-edit the clip and sync it perfectly to the track.

First Day Of Editing (17/10/16)

Today we started editing the first clips that we had recorded on Friday in the studio. This was done in the editing suite of the college using premiere pro. In this we had the first verse of the track extracted and put onto premiere pro to be further edited. From our review of all of the clips we found that the lighting of the actor was slightly dark so we added a brightness to the main actor and added a dissolve effect to merge between camera shots to create a seamless transition between footage. In this time we were also planning for our next shot on either Friday or Saturday from half term.

Ilford (17/10/16)

Today I went to the ilford exchange to see whether we would gain permission to do filming at the premises. In this I spoke to the management of the shopping centre however, we had a similar response to what we received from Westfield as they said that because of health and safety they don't permit filming in their building due to health and safety as a result we are going to have a group discussion as to whether we could find an alternative location or filming style that would allow us to compensate for the location.

First Day of filming (14/10/16)

Today we done the first part of our filming as we done the filming we needed to do in the studio. The recording time lasted from 3:00pm to 4:20pm In this time we ran through the song several times in different angles giving a range of angles and perspectives as we had the main actor sitting down, standing up and dancing to gain a range of clips. The shots that we managed was low, medium and close-up shots of him singing to  the audio. The people present during the filming session was Joshua, Ashlee and the main actor.

Location Change / Recees (13/10/16)

As a result of not being able to film at Stratford because of the new West Ham stadium we have begun to look for other alternative location that could offer a similar shot to the one that we expected to use. The one that we have looked at as an alternative is the one a t Ilford exchange as this would be a shopping centre that isn't as crowded as westfield and easy to arrange as the filming permit their is more lenient. As a result I would have to arrange a meeting to seek permission to film.

Role list

This states all the sub-roles we would be having within the group as well as all the input we would have in the pre-production, filming and Editing Standpoint to divide the Tasks that we would be doing in the group. This would allow us to focus on getting tasks completed sooner and have us start filming.

Letter On Headed Paper

Thil letter on headed paper is going to be sent with the rest of the Filming and Photography Application form to request permission to film at a royal park (Hyde Park). This would be sent with the application as soon as we decide a date we can all possibly film.

Adobe Creative Suite Tutorials

This workshop was held on the 12/10/16 to provide clarity on the softwares produced by adobe creative suite (Photoshop, After effects, Premiere Pro & Illustrator.) The purpose of this workshop was to teach new skills to do in this workshop as well as a re-cap on the use of DSLR cameras. This workshop was to prepare us for the production part of our project (Editing and Filming) so all we would have the appropriate settings for filming.

Storyboard Analysis

In this we have a detailed scene by scene layout of the production as well as certain key frames and actions that would be performed at certain times. This allow us to have a organised time in which we want everything to in terms of location and actions performed by the artist but, we also have instructions for the  cameraman as we also state the camera shots that would be used at that moment allowing us to have a clear structure to the production of the music video. In total we should have 40 scenes in the entirety of the video along with 3 locations being used. In this we also looked at our case studies to look at the shots we could possibly use and editing techniques we could use for the editing process.

Copyright Email

This is the copyright clearance we had e-mailed to Def Jam Records that are the record label that have signed Jahkoy and have ownership of the music he has produced. In this we sent them an email to request clearance to use the audio of the artist they have signed. This is to eliminate the act of copyright claiming the video and having it either taken down or have no royalties to be claimed from the video. By doing this we legally ask the label to use the audio from the artist.

Recees

Recees Review

The recees that has been produced is a detailed analysis of all the locations we are  planning to uses in the video along with the opening times and whether the location would be used for narrative of for fillers in the video. In this we reviewed Westfield, Hyde Park and Studio. This was to work in correlation with the storyboard.

Constructing Recees (11/10/16)

In today's lesson we completed the Recees and Storyboard for the video production so that all our pre-production would be completed and would be able to start the filming process by Friday. In today's lesson we analysed all the locations we would be using as well as as finishing the drawing and writing of the storyboard and emailing westfield to see if they would allow filming.

Pre-plan conclusion (10/10/16)

In today's lesson we had a team talk about how we are going to finish off all of our pre-plan production In which we was gathering all of the components that we have done to ensure the planning process was complete so that we could start filming the music video. The plan was to have the planning done by this week so that we could begin filming this week. The scenes we are planning to have completed are the studio location as it is the core of part of the music video and one in which we have the closest access in using.

Song Analysis (Jahkoy - Poison)

Jahkoy's song poison is a rap/R&B song about a guy professing his love to a girl and using the imagery of poison which has negative connotations of poisoning someone connoting harm in this case it is used in the ideology of influencing someone with a potion of love and him falling under a spell as connoted in lyrics like "I drank the potion, I took a shot, and it's just a motion." Verse 1 is talking about him being committed to the given relationship as he states in lines like "I'll keep it 100" and "If you believe in me, Like I believe in you" showing the signs of him committing to her. The second verse he goes on about looking back at the time they spent together as well as well as how they spent time together as stated in lines like; "Trace the steps that we take" and "We roll up and roll out" showing commitment. This is something that would have to be captured in the main storyline of the song as we have to show a relationship unfolding between the main actor an female.

Lyric Analysis

Jahkoy Poison lyrics

(Verse 1)
I need it from you
No one else will do
I’ll keep it 100
If you believe in me
Like I believe in you
Then we can make sweet loving
(Pre-Chorus)
They gon hate it cause we making love
Like a special kind of 1 of 1
Got all these things I wanna do to ya
And Im a make sure that I get em done
(Chorus)
Cause you got me open
Just like a token, girl
I drank the potion
I took a shot
And it’s just the motion
I’ll take your love for what it’s worth
Got me feeling like there’s heaven on earth
Staring you down girl, where you been?
The illest girl, I’ll say it again
(Verse 2)
You tell me that you’re only getting older
Baby I don’t wanna hold you back
You act like I didn’t get to know ya
Where you been, where you be at
I know all that
Everything is on the hour like the military
And If I want it then I got it, I get on it like its missionary
Plus I’m looking at the right one
And you’re all I see, just a young visionary
Taste the love that we make
Trace the steps that we take
Work so hard for one break
Girl come lay where I lay
You know me, where I stay
We roll up and roll out
You and I the new bound
I go down, you go down
Yea, girl you know I want you bad
(Pre-Chorus)
They gon hate it cause we making love
Like a special kind of 1 of 1
Got all these things I wanna do to ya
And I’m a make sure that I get em done
(Chorus)
Cause you got me open
Just like a token, girl
I drank the potion
I took a shot
And it’s just the motion
I’ll take your love for what it’s worth
Got me feeling like there’s heaven on earth
Staring you down girl, where you been?
The illest girl, I’ll say it again
(Bridge)
Wanna hit that spot and make it feel right baby
Wanna get you hot then put you on ice baby
(Chorus)
Cause you got me open
Just like a token, girl
I drank the potion
I took a shot
And it’s just the motion
I’ll take your love for what it’s worth
Got me feeling like there’s heaven on earth
Staring you down girl, where you been?
The illest girl, I’ll say it again
